Alberto Manuel Brenes Biological Reserve

The Alberto Manuel Brenes Biological Reserve is located in the southeastern part of the Sierra Minera de Tilarán. 99.6% of its territory is located in the canton of San Ramón (districts of Los Angeles and Zapotal) in the province of Alajuela and the remaining 0.4% in the canton of Montes de Oro (district of La Union), in the province of Puntarenas.

The reserve covers an area of 7800 hectares, has a maximum altitude of 1520 mm, has an average temperature of 21 ° C, as well as an average precipitation of 3461 mm.

This protected area was declared in 1975 by Executive Decree No. 4960-A with the management category of the San Ramón Forest Reserve, with the justification of the conservation of water and flora of the region. Article 8 of the aforementioned decree established that the administration of the Forest Reserve would be in charge of a committee composed of three representatives of the Municipality of San Ramón and three representatives of the Regional University Center of the University of Costa Rica and with the advice of the General Directorate of Forests.

The Administrative Committee did not function as it should, since the municipality of the canton of San Ramón and MAG did not have any interest shown by the Reserve. In the early years, administrative decisions were made by the authorities of the Regional University Center of San Ramón and Mr. Álvaro Acosta, who promoted the creation of the Reserve, who renounced part of its territory to the University to set up a camp on the outskirts of the Reserve's limits. In 1991, through Executive Decree No. 20172-MIRENEM, the management category of the Forest Reserve was replaced by the San Ramón Protection Area.

In 1993, in the face of possible mining in the Reserve, the community of San Ramón was organized and carried out through Law No. 7354 of August 10, its category and new name will be changed. Alberto Manuel Brenes Biological Reserve. Its name is a form of recognition and homage to Doctor Alberto Manuel Brenes Mora, botanist, outstanding researcher and native of San Ramón; Declared in 1970 by the Legislative Assembly of Costa Rica as meritorious of the sciences.

The Reserve is currently co-administered between the West Headquarters of the University of Costa Rica and the National System of Conservation Areas.

Therefore, the administration mechanism of the Reserve is a unique feature, shared between the University of Costa Rica - Western Headquarters and the National System of Conservation Areas through the Central Volcanic Cordillera Conservation Area.
