It is located north of the Central Valley, on the Central Volcanic Mountain Range, between the Poas and Irazu volcano massifs. This magnificent natural treasure includes the Barva and Cacho Negro volcanoes, which extends from Alto de la Palma, in the north of the Moravian canton, to the La Selva Protection Area in Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí.

It has a maximum height of 2906 m above sea level at the summit of the Barva volcano and records a minimum temperature of 3 °C and a maximum of 24 °C. Precipitation varies from 2500 mm on the slopes overlooking the central valley to 5734 mm on the Caribbean slopes.

The Braulio Carrillo National Park is one of the largest in Costa Rica with 50,000 hectares of protected areas and is located in one of the districts with the steepest topography in the country. The landscape is composed of high mountains covered with forests and a large number of canyons that run into rivers and ravines of great importance in the production of hydroelectric energy.

Braulio Carrillo National Park has two public areas: Quebrada González and Volcán Barva, which provide facilities for visitors. The Ceibo sector is dedicated to protection and research.

This Braulio Carrillo National Park takes its name in honor of the third head of state who governed Costa Rica between 1837 and 1842.

In 1977, the construction of the current San Jose - Guápiles road began and a year later, to avoid the irrational destruction of the forest, the Braulio Carrillo National Park was created, according to Presidential Decree No. 8357 of April 15, 1978, ratified by Republic Act No. 6280 on November 14, 1978.

The National Park was subsequently expanded to a total of 47,586 hectares.

Recently, by 2015, it increased its area to 50,000 hectares.
